A TSA agent flagged and tampered with my daughter's pre-packed allergy-friendly meal by sticking a gloved finger into it, making it inedible for her nine-hour journey from Houston to London. There were no allergen-free choices available. She has a life-threatening allergy to pine nuts, which were included in the primary meal being offered, and we were also concerned about cross-contact.

United Offered No Safe Meal, Then TSA Ruined the Food We Brought

6/15/2026- My daughter was traveling on United Airlines when we discovered that the pre-selected meal options on the flight were not safe for her. There were no allergen-free choices available. She has a life-threatening allergy to pine nuts, which were included in the primary meal being offered, and we were also concerned about cross-contact.

In the past, when she has traveled on other airlines, we have packed a sweet potato and mashed avocado for her to eat. For some reason, a TSA agent at IAH flagged her meal. Rather than asking why she was traveling with it, he proceeded to stick his gloved finger into the avocado. He told her this was not allowed, yet handed it back to her anyway, saying, “I’ll let it slide this one time.” At that point, however, her only meal for the entire journey had been contaminated.

As frequent travelers, we have realized that airports can be just as challenging as the airlines. There needs to be a restaurant or kiosk where people can purchase allergen-free meals before boarding a long-haul flight. The lack of understanding and sensitivity toward people with life-threatening food allergies is outrageous.

As a mom, I am just as panicked as my young adult daughter, which is why I decided to share one of her many experiences. I would love to help with legislation to make meaningful change happen.
