Our biggest fear with traveling is of course the peanut and tree nut allergies of our 3 children ages, 12, 10, and 7. Not to mention the shellfish allergy of my two oldest children. Before booking the flight with Hawaiian Airlines, I asked them about serving peanuts on the flight. Of course, they had to give me their no liability speech of not being able to control other passengers from bringing nuts and that some of their snack options did contain nuts. I was okay with that just as long that they did not pass out nuts to everyone. We just crossed our fingers that no one around us would eat nuts. To our relief, they served cookies on our flight and later Maui Onion chips. They allowed us to pre-board with no problem at all and wipe down all the seats.
Our return flight was with Alaska Airlines and we were thoroughly impressed and satisfied. I notified them beforehand about my children’s allergies and when we got to the airport I told them again. The gate agent informed one of the flight attendants and she personally approached us while still sitting at the gate and asked questions about my kids’ allergies and how it will be handled. I was so appreciative and relieved that we were treated like human beings and not like an inconvenience which has happened in other situations. They do not serve nuts and requested the 3-4 rows in front and behind us to refrain from eating nuts.
I don’t know how much Alaska Airlines understands how much we appreciated them for easing our fears and anxieties. Our children are very much aware of their nut allergies and I can see the worry and anxiety on their faces when we travel and the relief on their faces when they hear that no nuts will be served on our flight. It allows them to be what kids are supposed to be, carefree and worry free. It was very much an Aloha experience.
