Everyone is fallible. One innocent mistake, one mislabeled snack—and a terrifying moment at 30,000 feet for a toddler with multiple food allergies.

Same Snack, Different Brand—A Dangerous Assumption!

5/16/2019 : My daughter is allergic to dairy, nuts, and sesame. When she was 3 years old, we were flying home from Hawaii to Sacramento. During the Hawaiian Airlines flight, they served Maui onion chips. Addie had safely eaten a similar brand while we were in Hawaii, so my husband—unaware it was from a different company—gave her one to try.

I was distracted with our infant son at the time. Addie licked the chip and immediately began vomiting and developed lip swelling. We quickly checked the bag and saw that it was labeled “contains milk.”

I immediately grabbed her epinephrine auto-injector, but fortunately, her symptoms did not progress. I administered Benadryl and closely monitored her condition. As a pediatric nurse practitioner, and with my husband being a physician, we felt confident in our ability to assess the situation. The flight attendants checked in on us throughout the flight. Thankfully, she did not require emergency care—but it was a very close call.
