My 9 year old son has a peanut allergy. Recently my family flew from New York to Honolulu, Honolulu to Kauai, Kauai to Honolulu, and then back to New York all on Hawaiian Airlines. We were well prepared and had a good experience although I would say they do NOT cater to allergies.
We were allowed to board the plane early for each flight to disinfect my son’s seat. We brought our own disinfecting wipes. I do not know if they would have been provided. It was not offered and I did not ask. The crew had no issue with us pre-boarding for this process. However there are no buffer zones created and no announcements made regarding passengers with allergies on board a flight. Also, they serve lots of nuts! In particular, Macadamia Nuts. They also sell Snickers and Peanut M&Ms. They would not withhold these snacks from the flights. They also could not guarantee that the meal was not cross contaminated.
We took no chances and brought all my son’s meals and snacks. Since his allergy is only to peanuts and it is not airborne we felt safe with our plan. I would still say that my best experiences have been on JetBlue, mainly due to the buffer zone and the nut free Skeeter snacks.
