From No Nut Traveler:
My steadfast advice is this: never accept airline meals if you have a food allergy. I strongly encourage others to read my investigative article in Allergic Living for more detail: https://www.allergicliving.com/2023/12/21/the-trouble-with-airline-meals-and-food-allergies/
Testimonial: 2/16/2026 I was on a 10-hour flight from São Paulo to Chicago, which included two meals during the flight. I have a tree nut allergy and made this known to the flight attendant.
When the first meal was served, I again mentioned my allergy. The flight attendant told me she did not know whether any of the meals contained allergens. I asked if I could see ingredient lists or labels for the meal options to make sure they did not contain nuts, but she said that United Airlines does not provide flight attendants with any ingredient or allergen information for the meals.
There was no information available anywhere, and nothing provided to the flight attendants regarding what the meals contained. There was also no labeling on the meals themselves. Since it was only about an hour into the flight and I wasn’t too hungry, I decided it wasn’t worth the risk and skipped the meal entirely.
The second meal was served about eight and a half hours into the flight, roughly an hour and a half before landing. I once again asked for ingredient or allergen information, and the flight attendant again told me there was absolutely no labeling or information available for the meals being served. This time, the meal was a breakfast sandwich.
Because it had been about 10 hours since I had last eaten, I decided to try it, assuming that a breakfast sandwich would not contain nuts. After just two bites, I felt my throat begin to itch and my mouth start to swell. I immediately stopped eating and had to take Benadryl that I had brought with me.
For the entire 10-hour flight, I was unable to safely eat anything, and no allergen or ingredient information was provided for any of the meals. I found it extremely concerning that one of the largest airline companies in the world lacks basic safety standards for food service, offering no transparency about
