I was on a JetBlue flight (2/11/2024)from St Lucia to JFK last night. A buffer zone was announced for my peanut/tree nut allergic daughter. The mother in front of us threw her hands up said “this is ridiculous!” I leaned over and said Well it’s MY daughter. She complained to me that she should have been informed ahead of time.
She then asked my daughter if it’s “an airborne thing?” Without getting too into details the mom of 3 sitting in front of us had peanut butter sandwiches which she claimed was all she had for her kids to eat. Jet Blue offered free snack boxes and sandwiches, but they refused them. Flight attendants found one seat in the front of the plane my daughter could move to. They could not force this family not to eat the sandwiches. Given that we would be flying over the ocean for over four hours my daughter’s anxiety was in high gear after hearing the mother was still going to serve the sandwiches, she moved her seat.
The flight attendants told her they had never seen anyone refuse to comply like that. The mother then offered her children pasta and chicken fingers, so she did have other food!!!! My daughter is 22 and has such anxiety regarding flying with her allergy and the whole situation was just so upsetting. But we did not get heated or combative because there was solution offered. But it is disheartening to see someone so thoughtless regarding this on a flight. Jet Blue did the best they could do. Right? What if it had been a completely full flight? Would anyone have offered to switch seats?!?
