I recently flew American Airlines out of Charlotte Douglass Airport (CLT) on 4/20/2026.
When I approached the gate agent to ask about boarding, she immediately yelled at me to “go stand behind the wall” (a short wall separating the walkway at gate E9). I stopped approaching and tried to speak to her from a distance, explaining that I needed to ask about preboarding.
She held up her hand and asked why I needed to preboard. I said that I needed to wipe down the seats, and she just stared at me. Thinking she couldn’t hear me because she was making me stay so far back, I said more loudly, “I have a severe allergy.”
She laughed at me and rolled her eyes.
At that point, we were essentially having to speak across the distance she created, and the entire gate area could hear. It was incredibly embarrassing, as I had no privacy to explain a serious medical condition.
I stared back at her for a few seconds, and she eventually said, “Ok, you can preboard,” while smirking, as if I was being unreasonable.
