Flying with two kids who have airborne life threatening food allergies is very scary. There are still people out there that will take things seriously and treat people with respect. We flew home on Spirit last Wednesday (MCO to ORD) and the crew was above and beyond amazing. Not only did the crew remove all nut based products for sale but, they also removed things that contained powdery dairy (cheetos, etc).
They made announcements prior to boarding and after everyone was seated. Then, two crew members (Sara and Robert) went row to row for the 3 rows ahead and behind us asking if people brought on such items without revealing it was us. They read labels and offered to give alternative snacks. I just asked for the announcement and I probably downplayed how serious things are for the kids by saying peanut M&Ms are ok because they are coated etc… They offered to let me board early which I would have asked for. That was the most amazing flight ever and at no point did I hear a single complaint, sigh, hesitation or see an eye roll from them or other passengers.
Everyone was amazing and genuinely concerned for our kids safety and to get home without incident. I will never hesitate to fly Spirit again. And they allow medical supply bags on for free vs a carry on charge. We were able to pack for a week in school sized back packs and did not pay for luggage. I shipped most of our food and sundries for free from Walmart .com at no more cost than if I had shopped locally. I have a wee bit more confidence and the itch to travel more. Thank you for your advocacy – I have no doubt this was a trickle effect from your tireless efforts to educate!
