I recently took a flight from Italy to Florida. I flew on American Airlines however I believe this is an issue with other carriers as well.
When I was served my lunch the dessert contained nuts, probably walnuts, and I had told the flight attendant that I could not eat it for fear of cross-contamination as I have a tree nut allergy. Her response was, “well, just don’t eat it”.
Yet again for the second meal, there was a noodle dish with cashews. I reminded her that I am very allergic, and she took the meal and said to me “here have some fruit “. She was quite nonchalant about it. I asked if there was any type of substitute meal and she replied, “No”. I flew Premium economy by the way.
There are several issues within the context of a person having a peanut or a nut allergy, and I’m hoping that the airlines look at their recipes and avoid using nuts all together. I am sure that the chefs can come up with alternative desserts and meals that do not include nuts! When I told the flight attendant that I had a nut allergy she stated that they were no peanuts in the food. But there are many of us who have other nut allergies so why do the airlines distinguish peanut nut allergies with other nut allergies? In the future, I will be ordering my meals ahead of time. American… you can do better!
