On 4/24/2022, I had the most horrific treatment from Italia Trasporto Aereo (ITA) Airlines in relation to my severe nut allergy, on my flight back from Rome to London Heathrow. FYI-ITA is the state-owned flag carrier airline of Italy. It is fully owned by the Government of Italy via the Ministry of Economy and Finance. The airline flies to over 41 scheduled domestic, European, and a few intercontinental destinations
Despite me calling in advance, emailing and making arrangements at the gate for them to make an announcement and request that they not serve nuts, they refused to let the plane know they had two passengers on board with food allergies and to not eat nuts.
Myself and another young female were pleading with the crew and the pilot at the front of the plane for 15-20 minutes and they told us it was not possible to tell the plane to not eat nuts as it was not in their policy. The other young woman had previously flown twice with ITA and announcements had been made.
We had no choice but to return to our seats as they were going to call security to remove us from the plane unless we did so. The only option was for me to personally tell all the rows on the flight to please kindly not eat nuts for the duration of the flight (2 hours). Thank God I’m confident enough to do so. Airlines must get better at this. It’s absolutely disgraceful and will cost people their lives.
