WestJet continues to impress with their service to food-allergic travelers. My eldest has anaphylactic reactions to tree nuts, sesame, and shellfish. This was the first time I had his allergies noted on the flight manifest (as I had been previously worried about him willingly donning that potential scarlet letter).
At each departure and connection, the desk team called me up to clarify the allergy, to verify that we had Epipens, and to direct us to pre-board to wipe down our seats. In addition, they told us that the flight crew would further discuss things once we had boarded.
Once on the plane, the flight attendants checked in while we wiped the area down and asked about my son’s allergies, adding notes to their manifest. They asked us if we wanted them to request that the entire plane not consume any of his allergens. He has shown no signs of airborne sensitivity, so we requested that they only notify two rows in front and behind of him. They diligently did this, making sure that no language barrier led to unnecessary risk. One of the (very understanding) neighbours did have some sort of snack mix with nuts which they disclosed and said they would not eat. Westjet gave them a complimentary snack from the on-board cafe menu to replace it!
I commended them on each leg of our departure and return. It was outstanding service and we felt very safe with their knowledge, protocols, and care.
