5/10/2024 I flew internationally to Sweden. One leg from Dallas to New York (NYC) and then New York City to Sweden.
I have a peanut allergy (anaphylaxis) and also have had airborne allergic reactions, so this is always a stressful time for me to travel internationally. I took all of my usual protocols was very prepared with a doctor’s letter, treated my requests very seriously and asked each gate agent if they would allow me to pre board and if they could make an announcement and not hand out any snacks with nuts. They were able to accommodate me on every single flight I took which is a total of four flights. I believe the airlines are doing much better than they used to be. I have had anaphylaxis due to peanut exposure and have so far only a mild reaction to tree nuts.
I noticed that when I treated the airline crew with kindness and alerted them with the severity of my anaphylaxis they were more accommodating and kinder back. We are our best advocates in flying and must always treat our anaphylaxis allergies seriously so that others will take us seriously. Do not be afraid to stand up. This hasn’t always been my story flying, it’s usually been a lot scarier and not so easy. But I have noticed a trend lately that it is getting better, and they seem to be more aware. I understand that we have a lot to still do but I wanted to thank No Nut Traveler for fighting for us because I do believe it is working and showing up as working when I board an aircraft.
I am also very proud of Delta airlines and for the changes they have made so I could have a safe flight.
I did not eat any of their food but only the food that I personally packed myself.
Be prepared, stand up for yourself, and be kind in the process.
