I had a very interesting experience today at the Orange County, CA (SNA) security check. When I approached security with my 8 year old son, I was asked if I had any food in our carry on bags. I told them my son has food allergies, so I did (and I had a lot!) the next thing I know, the TSA agents held our bags of to the side.
Three different agents took a bag at separate stations and proceeded to go through all our food with a security wand. I asked them to change their gloves first, and they did; however, it felt absolutely demoralizing. I also felt really worried that our safe inflight food was at risk of being thrown away or worse contaminated.
I asked the agent why they were doing this. And I was told they are one of the first airports to search foods and all others will begin shortly. I asked what about dietary restrictions and ADA. The agent gave me this business card to call for private screening in the future.
