Flew on Delta summer 2018 with my son who is allergic to tree nuts and peanuts. Flight attendant made an announcement about the peanut allergy which was appreciated. He refused to announce about tree nuts when I asked him to because he said it wasn’t part of their policy, and he proceeded to tell me that nuts are a good source of protein.
He then condescendingly asked if we wanted to get off the flight. I said, “Oh, no. Don’t go there with me. I will just ask the rows in front and behind us to please refrain from eating nuts while we are on board”. I kindly asked the row in front of me if they would mind not eating nuts for the hour and 49 minutes we were going to be on this flight. The woman sitting directly in front of me said, “I’m going to eat my cashews. It’s the only snack I have and if I get hungry I am going to eat them”. I explained to her about my son and if we had to do an emergency landing it would inconvenience everyone on the plane. She said she was going to eat her cashews anyway. I offered to buy her whatever snacks she wanted. No dice, she wanted those nuts.
I called over a flight attendant (female this time) who was much nicer than the male fight attendant). She moved us to the very back of the plane where the rows in front of us were much nicer. She also must have spoken to the male flight attendant because he did end up making an ALL nut announcement a little while later, and, he and 2 other (all male) flight attendants came over to apologize to us! On the way out that flight attendant who had been so rude to us in the beginning said, “I’m so glad it all worked out for you”. I thanked him for being so kind. I have no idea what, or who, made him become so much nicer but I bet someone clued him in to all the press that airlines and nut allergies have been getting lately!
