My 11-year-old is anaphylactic to trace amounts of peanuts and on a recent flight during Spring Break to Hawaii from Vancouver, a family of 5 deliberately ignored the airline and our request of them to refrain from eating peanuts. The mom gave her kids all sorts of peanutty chocolates and even had a Snickers bar resting on her seat.

Air Canada Buffer Zone is nothing to ‘Snicker’ about!

My 11-year-old is anaphylactic to trace amounts of peanuts and on a recent flight during Spring Break to Hawaii from Vancouver, a family of 5 deliberately ignored the airline and our request of them to refrain from eating peanuts.

The mom gave her three primary school aged kids all sorts of peanutty chocolates and gummies when we took off at 8am and even had a Snickers bar on her seat. My son was wearing a mask and long sleeve shirt and despite all those precautions, the peanut residue of her children who ate peanuts caused my son to itch and develop severe eczema during the 6-hour flight. My 11-year-old was afraid to take off his mask to eat and drink as this mom and her kids were touching and kicking all of our seats.

I wanted to raise the issue with the flight attendant, but given her attitude, my husband feared the woman could intentionally smear peanut products on our son. The flight was packed and nowhere to switch seats either.
I later spoke with Air Canada on our flight back and called them and I was told to raise the issue next time. Eating peanuts in a buffer zone is not allowed and flight attendants will ask the individual to stop. If they don’t, they will be moved. I was told if they refuse to move, they will be arrested upon arrival.

Luckily, on our flight back our flight attendant was phenomenal. He basically told people not to eat nuts in buffer zones and asked them if they had any issues with that. No one said a peep! 🙏🏼
Never in my life would I thought someone would be such a jerk. For those who pray, pray for this mom, her husband and their kids to learn empathy.
