On a recent trip, we had two very different experiences when flying with our daughter, who is anaphylactic and has an airborne peanut/tree nut allergy.
On our outbound flight with American Airlines, we asked the crew to make an announcement asking nearby passengers to refrain from eating nuts. We were told it was against policy to make such announcements—even though our daughter’s allergy is severe and airborne. This left us feeling extremely vulnerable and unsupported.
On the return flight with British Airways, we were told that nuts would still be served in first class, but they did make a general announcement about the allergy to the rest of the cabin. While not perfect, at least British Airways acknowledged the allergy and took a step to increase awareness and reduce risk.
