The airline was Lufthansa. I had called the airline a month ahead of time to advise of my teenage son’s severe peanut/tree nut allergy and provided our flight information. Our travel agent also advised airline of the allergies when making our reservations.. When we checked our baggage and received our boarding passes, I provided the ticket agent with letter signed by my son’s allergist and was told “make sure you show this to the flight attendant when you board”. I asked if we could pre-board and was denied.
When our son handed the flight attendant his boarding pass and doctor’s letter, the flight attendant immediately stated “We are serving nuts on this flight”. I advised them I had called ahead with my request. They kept asking who I had spoken to. Unfortunately, I did not get a name. They could not accommodate my son and ultimately, we were told since this flight is six hours mostly over the water and “Due to his severe allergy and for his safety, we can not fly him on this plane”. We were told that all “international flights” serve nuts. They could not be responsible if our son had any reaction. We were escorted off the plane. As a result of their action, we were not able to continue to Italy which we had planned 8 months in advance. The flight attendants were rude and refused to accommodate and insisted the nuts would be served. My husband contacted the airline the day after and was told by a Lufthansa representative that “Lufthansa’s official policy is to not load any nut products on any international flights”. Due to this non-compliance of their own policy, our vacation was ruined.
